The fourth Sunday in Lent signalled a time for people to return to their home parish and 'mother church' for a special service. By the 20th century this event was all but forgotten until Constance Penswick-Smith campaigned to revive the tradition with a greater focus on celebrating motherhood and mothers. In the US, Ann Jarvis wanted to honour her mum, a peace activist, and managed to persuade President Woodrow Wilson to create Mother's Day. Over time, both customs merged to form the celebration we know today.
