Whether it's a box of chocolates or breakfast in bed, all mums appreciate being made to feel special on Mother's Day. However, and somewhat ironically, Mothering Sunday started as a Christian tradition back in the 16th century that had nothing to do with mothers at all!
The fourth Sunday in Lent signalled a time for people to return to their home parish and 'mother church' for a special service. Domestic staff were given the day off to attend and catch up with their families. Those returning picked flowers along the way or baked cakes for their mums, and so the tradition of gift giving began.
By the 20th century this event was all but forgotten until Constance Penswick-Smith campaigned to revive the tradition with a greater focus on celebrating motherhood and mothers. In the US, Ann Jarvis wanted to honour her mum, a peace activist, and managed to persuade President Woodrow Wilson to create Mother's Day. Over time, both customs merged to form the celebration we know today.
